A debit note is a document issued by a supplier to the buyer when the taxable value or tax charged in the original invoice needs to be increased. Under Section 34 of the CGST Act, a registered person must issue a debit note when the tax invoice issued for a supply is found to have a lower value than the actual taxable amount, or when the tax charged is less than the tax payable on the supply. It effectively increases the buyer's liability and the supplier's output tax.
A debit note must be issued when: 1) The taxable value in the original invoice is less than the actual value of goods or services supplied. 2) The tax charged in the original invoice is lower than the tax payable. 3) Additional charges need to be levied after the original supply โ such as freight, packing, or revised pricing. The debit note must reference the original invoice number and date.
A valid debit note format under GST must include: supplier name, address, and GSTIN; buyer name, address, and GSTIN; a unique serial number; date of issue; reference to the original invoice number and date; taxable value, tax rate, and tax amount (CGST+SGST or IGST); reason for issuing the debit note; and the signature of the supplier. Our generator auto-fills all mandatory fields in the exact Tally ERP layout.
