What is a Credit Note under GST?

A credit note is a document issued by a registered supplier under GST when the taxable value or tax charged in the original invoice exceeds the actual amount payable. It is issued in cases of sales returns, post-sale discounts, or when goods supplied are found deficient. Under Section 34 of the CGST Act, 2017, every registered person who issues a credit note must declare it in the GST return for the month in which it was issued.

When to Issue a Credit Note?

A credit note must be issued when: (1) the taxable value in the invoice exceeds the actual taxable value of goods or services supplied, (2) the tax charged is more than the tax payable for the supply, (3) goods are returned by the buyer, or (4) services are found deficient. The credit note must be issued before the 30th of November following the end of the financial year in which the supply was made, or before filing the annual return โ€” whichever is earlier.

Credit Note Format โ€” What's Required?

What is the difference between Credit Note and Debit Note?

A credit note is issued by the supplier when the invoice value needs to be reduced (e.g., goods returned, discount given). A debit note is issued when the invoice value needs to be increased (e.g., undercharged tax, additional goods supplied). Both are governed by Section 34 of the CGST Act.

Can I download the credit note in PDF?

When should a credit note be issued?

A credit note should be issued when goods are returned, when excess tax is charged, when a post-sale discount is given, or when services are found deficient. It must be issued before 30th November of the next financial year or before filing the annual return, whichever is earlier.
